Review discount dates, groups and combinations
A rule’s amount is only part of the offer. Dates, customer group, combination choices, code and live state also need to match the promotion you intend.
Check date restrictions
- Open the rule from Discounts/Promotions/Offers.
- Find Only valid for certain dates?.
- When Yes is selected, review the displayed Dates start field and End date.
- Compare both dates with the offer you intend to advertise. Check the actual start/end behaviour in your test plan.
Check customer eligibility
- Find Assign to customer group?.
- When Yes is selected, choose the intended Customer group.
- Confirm the customer’s assignment as a separate task. A group’s name does not assign customers or establish the rule’s calculation.
- Test both an eligible customer and one outside the group, including the anonymous route where relevant.
Check combinations and priority
Review Can it be combined?. The discount list has drag, up and down controls for priority. Moving a rule sends a save request immediately. Use Change discount priority to record the current sequence, make an intended change and check the saved order, then test overlapping rules together. Do not infer the resulting arithmetic from the title or visual priority alone.
Code and live state
Review Discount code against the intended code-based or automatic journey, and check Live? before finishing. Choose the intended live state deliberately; do not rely on a new rule’s starting value. Verify the triggering route rather than assuming that an empty code or a live flag alone produces the intended offer.
Check an automatic offer without a code
- Decide whether customers should enter a code or whether the offer should be considered automatically when its conditions are met.
- For the automatic route, check that Discount code is blank on the intended rule. Review its type, qualifying range, minimum quantity/spend, dates, customer group and live state together.
- After any intended save, reopen the same rule and check the stored settings.
- In your agreed test setup, compare an unpaid basket below the conditions with one that qualifies, without entering a code. Open the applied-discount details to identify the actual named rule and saving.
- Reduce the quantity or qualifying spend again and check the result. Include excluded goods and other active offers in separate comparisons before advertising the promotion.
For example, an online till quantity rule with a blank code, minimum quantity one and minimum qualifying spend £50 applied a £5 saving to £50 of eligible goods; reducing eligible goods to £49.95 removed the saving. This illustrates that rule and basket. A blank code alone does not satisfy the other conditions or establish the result for every rule type, channel, customer or overlapping offer. Use the worked promotion checks for the full comparison.
Removing a date or customer-group restriction
Choose the intended answer beside the full setting label. Switching Only valid for certain dates? to No removes the date restriction when saved; record the old dates first if you may need them again. Switching Assign to customer group? to No removes that group restriction. Review the remaining eligibility and live settings before saving, because removing a restriction may widen the intended audience.
If you enable either setting again, enter or select the intended values and check them after saving. Use Live? No when you intend to switch the offer off rather than merely change its eligibility.
A useful test record
Keep the rule title, type, scope, dates, group, code route, method, amount, use limits and priority with your expected basket result. Include one qualifying and one non-qualifying case. This makes an unexpected result easier to explain to support.
