Delete a category and review Undo
Delete a category when you intend to remove that department or grouping. If you only need a clearer name or a different position, edit or move it instead. Plan the products and navigation that should remain available afterwards.
Review what uses the category
- Open Catalogue & Stock → Categories / Departments and find the intended row. Check its parent path and title, especially where names are repeated.
- Expand the category and review its subcategories. A category that still has subcategories cannot be deleted. Move children to their intended home first, or review them individually if they too should be removed.
- Find the products assigned to the category. Add or move them to another suitable category before removing a grouping they still need.
- Review Webshop Menus and note any links to this category. Deleting the category can remove those category menu links too.
- Keep a record of its title, parent, product memberships and menu placements if you may need to reconstruct the arrangement.
Delete the intended category
- Choose Delete on the correct category row.
- Read Delete category? and the question asking whether you want to delete this category.
- Cancel if you need to inspect its products, children or menu links further. Confirm only when deletion is the intended outcome.
- Read the result message. If it asks you to remove subcategories first, return to the tree and review those children; do not keep repeating the deletion.
- After a successful deletion, review the remaining tree, the affected products and their category memberships, and the relevant WebShop menu.
- Check the intended till and customer-facing navigation before considering the reorganisation finished.
Deleting a category and deleting product records are separate tasks. If your aim is to remove products themselves, review product visibility and deletion rather than using category deletion as a substitute.
Example: retire a seasonal collection
If products in “Summer collection” also belong in “Handbags”, check that Handbags membership first. Move any subcategories you want to retain, and note the Summer collection menu link. Then review deletion of the now-unneeded category. For removing a collection from selected products while retaining the category, use Remove category on the products instead.
If you deleted the wrong category
- Review Undo delete on the Categories page promptly. Check the available action’s description before using it; do not assume it represents every earlier deletion.
- If it identifies the action you need to reverse, use Undo and read its result.
- Reopen the restored category and check its title, parent, active status, product memberships and menu placements.
- Review the affected till and WebShop views. A successful Undo message still needs a check of the complete arrangement you intended to restore.
If no relevant Undo is available, or the restored arrangement is incomplete, contact support with the category’s original path, approximate deletion time and the subsequent actions taken. Do not assume Undo is a permanent history or a complete site rollback.
Troubleshooting
- Subcategories prevent deletion: expand the branch and decide where each child belongs. Moving a retained child is different from deleting it.
- A product is harder to find afterwards: search by SKU in Product Management, then review its category memberships and live status.
- A menu entry disappeared: review the relevant WebShop menu and its intended replacement destination.
- An error or interrupted result: refresh and inspect the current category, product memberships and menu before retrying or using Undo.
