How can we help?

Record a product’s cost

A product’s cost and its selling price are different values. Use the cost established by your business, and check the basis expected by your reports before updating a whole range.

Find the main product cost

  1. Open Catalogue & Stock → Product Management and find the intended product.
  2. Select Edit, check its name and SKU, then open Advanced.
  3. Under Pricing, tax and reviews, find Cost, shown with the shop’s currency symbol.
  4. Compare the stored amount with the cost you intend to record. Review applicable price/cost tax-inclusion choices before deciding the amount.
  5. For an intended update, enter the agreed cost and use the product editor’s Save changes & close.
  6. Reopen the same product and check the saved amount. Check the relevant margin or stock-value report separately before relying on its result.

Example: selling price is unchanged

If a supplier changes what you pay for an item, review its cost separately from the price you charge customers. Check the intended product and any option-specific cost before changing a shared record. Do not copy the selling price into Cost merely to fill an empty field.

Variants and other cost fields

Advanced Pricing can also show Cost fields for options or combinations. Identify whether you are editing the main product or an option-specific amount. Check a representative item in the intended report rather than assuming every report uses the same cost field.

Keep stock and purchasing tasks separate

Recording a product cost is different from receiving stock, entering a supplier order or correcting a physical quantity. Use the relevant stock or purchasing workflow for those operations.

If a report differs

Keep the product/variant, saved cost, tax-inclusion setup, report name and date range with your question. Review how that report treats costs and previous orders before changing the catalogue cost repeatedly to make a historic total match.
